Second grade hiking day

In the first week of school, Year 2 hiked from Göttweig to the sequoia trees. In pleasant hiking weather, we studied the information signs carefully and discovered an interesting connection between the monastery and the sequoia trees:

Adalbert Dungel was the forest warden of Göttweig Abbey from 1877 to 1886 and planted several seeds of the “Wellingtonia gigantea” in the ground in 1880. Today, these “Adalbert Wellingtonias” tower high above the treetops of the surrounding forests as true giant trees. There are also two of these specimens in the garden in front of the monastery.
